Analysis of Getting Back Up On That Horse
Growing up with horses.
He’s perfected where he stands.
He always keeps a cool head.
And he rides with good quiet hands.
Transmitting such conviction
Always puts the horse at ease.
The horse feels safe and confident.
It’s aim become to please.
This worked in life at large
The horseman came to understand.
He met with much success,
And there was always help at hand.
And then one day, when illness came,
He still steadfast rode through.
Without complaint, nor fear, or doubt.
No other way would do.
Time and again he beat all odds,
And all were quite amazed.
Good riders, see, can ill afford
To let themselves be phased.
And when the odds were stacked
Against him pulling through at all,
The horseman didn’t lose his cool.
His trust would break his fall.
“Just do the surgery doc”, he said.
“I’m sure as I can be.
You do what you are good at.
Leave surviving up to me.
No need to take complete control
And try to steer my course.
Just leg me up again will you?
Back on that bloody horse.”
The surgeon didn’t hedge his bets.
His hopes were riding high
To see the savvy horseman
Win the stakes and gallop by.
And so - as was his style -
The horseman, having this on side,
Excelled with flying colours
In his death-defying ride.
No greater proof prevailed.
It now was plain to see of course.
A cool, clear head is king
For getting back up on that horse.

About this poem
I wrote this, inspired by my partner of 17 years when he was 59. Due to complications after a double lung transplant, he miraculously survived an additional life-threatening surgery. These days he is no longer with us. But gosh, his attitude in life was an inspiration to many.
