Analysis of Your Time is Not Mine

M Brillhart 1977 (United States)

Time is a funny matter
but it is not a laughing matter

Its power is momentous
just one single piece of it
can alter life as you know it

In its cuffs, we are imprisoned
forced to abide life
at a speed of its choosing

Eyes of youth look upon
time’s temperamental taunts
as cruel a torture one can bear

the patience time seeks of children
Is like the slow, painful journey
of a turtle crossing an infinite freeway

For the well-aged
Time’s upbeat rhythm outpaces
the best of intentions

Moments dash to the finish line
Before they are seen on the horizon
forcing light to a life not truly lived

A single day creeps by
Each second of the clock
Tick… tock… tick

The same day flashes by
In the short moment
that you close your eyes.

Time’s an individualized show
from nature’s cruelest mistress
Its hold, a film from a captivating angle

A greater power none possess
More than time’s hold over our lives
The irony lost only those within its grasp

Take time’s hand, use its guide, and heed its call
Stop, slow down, but make haste
With or without you time will move on

Waste not want not
Your precious time
you don’t know how much you get

For time is a funny matter
but it is not a laughing matter

About this poem

This poem is about how perspective affects your view of everything. Time for instance. As a kid time moves so slowly, all you want is to grow up. I would impatiently wait and wait for summer to end because I missed school. Then you grow up and time speeds by. These days every day feels faster and fast and it does not feel like there will ever be enough time to finish everything I want to accomplish. Perspective-- changes everything.
