Analysis of Queen for a Day (elizabeth II regina)

(Poem by our daughter Lauren Hodgson)

Ever wonder what it must be like

To be Queen for a day?

For a young and lovely girl

The dream did come true

She had bouncing brown curls

And eyes made of blue.

She kept beautiful ponies

And rode them with skill

Ran free with her corgies

On Balmoral’s hill.

Then it all happened quickly

Her Papa was gone

He had been quite sickly

She had to be strong.

The crown was now hers

Fit snugly in place

With gems and ermine fur

It suited her face.

In those days she was happy

To have by her side

A Prince, tall and strapping

To comfort and guide.

Soon came little embraces

She mothered all four

Three princes, one princess

For her to adore

To her family, she was anchor

To England, shining star

She ruled without rancor

And led from afar

Knew her place as a Royal

Meant grace and service

And leaving her own soil

To share her kindness

As decades passed on apace

Her children grew fast

Found playmates and life mates

And true love at last

For her eldest, a goddess

With a shy magic

But love was dishonest

It’s ending, tragic

In those days it was clearer

Than ever before

The strength that had steered her

Was needed once more

A grandmother, she now viewed

The world through new eyes

Saw how this younger brood

Wore an online disguise

Some wisdom and clarity

She tried to bestow

To live charitably

Through life’s ebb and flow

Older now, she had endured

She looked on with pride

As her grandsons matured

To each, a new bride

Life for them was not easy

Each found his own path

Once again she was pleased

To hear babies laugh

Next, a worldwide pandemic

Struck England with force

Her yearly addresses

Comforted, of course

’21 was a sad year

Her Phillip passed on

All in black, with no fear

She mourned him alone.

But to those of us caring

This seemed an omen

She might soon be sharing

The same carriage Home.

As autumn leaves descended

The very next year

The Queen’s reign had ended

It was all too clear

She left her realm in mourning

With respects to pay

In history’s pages

Our queen for a day…

For a lifetime…

For the Ages.
