Analysis of Elusive Love

Janet Muirhead Hill 1942 (Colorado)

Love is like a rainbow
without its pot of gold.
Though impossible to grasp it,
It’s lovely to behold.

Love is like a vapor
a wispy, filmy cloud.
In vain I seek to hold it,
so pristine, pure, and proud.

Love is like a fountain,
a splashing, sparkling stream.
To contain it is to change it.
Love’s an elusive dream.

Love is like tomorrow,
lending promise to today,
enticing and alluring,
yet just a step away.

Love is like a sunbeam
dancing on a wave.
An effort to embrace it
could mean a watery grave.

A rainbow or a sunbeam
a fountain or a stream,
the promise of tomorrow,
a vapor, cloud, or dream,

cannot be held or bottled.
Like love, they must be free.
When unconfined, their beauty
shines forth for all to see.

About this poem

I wrote this poem many years ago as a young woman recently jilted, or perhaps, pursuing a love that could not be.
