Analysis of Eternal Art

I see your face,
and I am reminded of Van Gogh.

I met you on a Starry Night,
and on this starry night,
I lie awake.
I feel responsible
for every stroke,
every inch that I gave you,
and every color that you gave me when I was blank.
Now I blank as I lie awake,
trying to remember
how love became an artist, and how
my canvas became mixed
with sorrow, disinterest, and regret.
I regret having come to this painting
when I have seen your Almond Blossoms,
and the colors painted me with new life.
Now, the Sunflowers you once gave me
are Dunes in an Autumn Landscape, and what once gave me life
now makes me still.

I see your face,
and I am reminded that you are not Van Gogh,
for our art will never be eternal.

About this poem

I wrote this poem at three in the morning when I was remembering a past relationship with someone who I had romanticized my love for. In actuality, that person was not a healthy part of my life, and I initially felt guilty for having stayed with that person for so long. However, I realized that it was beautiful that I found my way out of that mirage and that I was able to grow from the experience. That beauty is a pricelessness that will always stay with me.
