Analysis of Metropolis

I walk the concrete sidewalks
Of a city that never sleeps
I am just one more face
In a sea of anonymity

I hear the sound of sirens
As they wail in the night
This metropolis is alive
With chaos and unrest

The neon lights bathed my skin
In an unnatural glow
The hustle and bustle around me
An unsettling hum
The aroma of street food
Drifts across my senses
The scent of spices and grease
A pungent reminder

I stare up at towering buildings
That scratch the sky above
The grandeur of it all
Leaves me feeling small

I pass by street performers
Who capture an audience's attention
Their talents unnoticed
By the masses

The subway's vibrations rumble
As I descend into the underworld
A hundred lives intersect here
And then they diverge once more

I find myself surrounded
By the rush of humanity
Yet I am alone
Lost in the crowd

The speed of life is unrelenting
And I am swept away
Yet somehow, I cling to hope
That someday, I'll find my way

For in this fast-paced existence
There lies a simple truth
That though life may be chaotic
It is also beautiful and breathless

Joe Strickland

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
