Analysis of Vainglorious

I cannot stand the sight of those
Who strut and preen, their egos gross
Their haughty gazes, smug and proud
As if they stand on higher ground

Their words, like acid, sting and burn
To make themselves feel more astute and learned
Their condescension, a bitter pill
That leaves a sour taste, ill-willed

They sneer and scoff at those less blessed
As if their wealth and status attest
To their superiority, their class
As if they're born to be first, to lead, to surpass

But in their arrogance they fail to see
That generosity and kindness are key
To true greatness, to honour and respect
To hearts and minds that are truly correct

So I choose to not be like these pompous few
With disdain for those who are not like me or you
I choose to embrace our differences and learn
That love for all is the only way to earn.

Joe Strickland

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
