Analysis of Emotional Purgatory

There is a place
That exists
In the depths
Of the human
Psyche,
A purgatory
Of sorts,
Where emotions
Run rampant
And consume
The soul.
It's a dark,
Foreboding place
Where even
The strongest
Of individuals
Can be reduced
To a mere shell
Of their former selves.

At times,
It feels
Like a never-ending
Labyrinth,
Filled with despair
And hopelessness.
The corridors
Are lined
With memories,
Both good
And bad,
That twist
And turn
Until
They become
Unrecognizable,
Leaving only
A gnawing
Sense of uncertainty.

In this emotional purgatory,
Time stands still.
Days blur together,
And one can never
Be sure
How long
They've been
Trapped
Within its walls.
It's as if
The universe
Has conspired
Against us,
Confining us
In this place
Until
We can no longer
Fight off
The demons
That live within us.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
