Analysis of Chronic Pain

Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)

Dropped like a strand of silver,
My body's anthem
Twisted into knots,
Chronic pain,
An unwelcome tenant.

I am a field,
Shattered by my own roots,
Digging deep,
Burrowing into marrow,
Each ache a testament of fragility.

In the realm of blood,
Cells wage a battle,
A symphony of tears
And burning nerves,
My body,
A delicate instrument,
Ravaged.

Nights drift in,
A lonely lullaby,
Pain the merciless conductor,
Orchestrating,
The score of sleep
Etched with never-ending ache.

I paint a smile
On this broken canvas,
An offering to those
Who cannot see,
An invisible burden
Stitched within my bones.

My skin weaves memories,
A tapestry of torment,
Tender moments dulled
By throbbing reminders,
Chronic pain,
The cruel master of my days.

But hold me, dear world,
In your tender gaze,
For within every line
Etched upon my face,
Is resilience's quiet
Consolation.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
