Analysis of Quiet Cemetery

Harry C. Craft III 1959 (Phoenix, Arizona)

In the late-night dark
I walk in the cemetery
down by the park
I see no ghouls
not even a Lark

The tombstones are lined in a neat row
as I look around
I do not see a soul
the quiet is relentless
and the streetlights project a dim glow

Off in the distance
I hear a faint howl
in the bushes near the road
I notice a throaty growl
up in the trees
I see the bright eyes of a hoot owl

But I have no fear
as I wander through the cemetery
for there is only peace here
and that is why I stroll through the cemetery
there are no ghosts or apparitions that appear
there is only me
and a cat that walks near

there are no sounds in the quiet cemetery
that is very clear
only the star filled sky
and no one to hear

About this poem

People are usually afraid of cemeteries, so I wrote this poem to let people know just how peaceful a cemetery can be.
