Analysis of Drumbeat
Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)
inspiring those with
Supernatural abilities,
speaks directly to hearts
with passion/creative diversity
bringing offset harmonies
and people together to a beat
Stepping into worlds
of visionaries bearing gifts
At will opening
closing temporal rifts
Of elemental progressions,
touching to depths ethereal
Making complex impressions
Touching soul and being intimately,
Arousing feelings
between waking moments
coming in and out of phase
speaking of ancestral dreams
each beat a natural means
to …become fluent in timing
sensually climbing
building walls of sound…
Fashioned by ancient technology,
designed with nature.
Material handpicked,
chosen carefully by craftsmen
engineering by manipulating interpretive sound.
To speak in rich, roaming streams of tones
Moving mountains, wings of sound with interwoven beats pounding rhythmically timed, sublime…
Practiced to perfection, drums which speak.
Telling stories of heroes/sheroes made,
dues paid, love being made
Of Kings and Queens
living beyond castles and thrones…
Being Real people
relating naturally
living in our bones
Paired with living sounds
in the mosaic,
of memories replayed,
messages of love
relayed to our souls
Being portrayed
as warning signs,
telling us do not continue to be
played for a fool, used as tools
to a trade/in undertones,
its song to carry us far, wide…
Talking drums
move people to leap into action
…dance.
Call people to war …if need be
Deliver the word faster than birds can fly.
Hit hard by hands feet/expanding minds
Hollow logs/animal skins stretched taut
Speak love notes ways which can’t be taught
Steel drums, electronic instruments,
Drumsticks and brushes, even balls and chains,
Become part of the instrumentality
where hand falls on part of the drum,
aiming for that sweet spot
where how the drum is hit
connects which makes it… sizzle and pop!
Messengers of emotional keys
to spiritual realms
building blocks to pleasure,
pairing with vocal cries
Elevates moods… creating trance states
taking us to new dimensions
To rhythms leaping deliberately.
Bathed in echoes
mind/body/spirits
speaking live, vocal notes.
You can set aside, yet not ignore
As souls in flight
dance to the other side
Of who we truly are…
among the stars.
Not by chance
our steps fly
To other dimensions
to find ourselves
A meeting place…
In other worlds
in time
