Analysis of Until You Know
Tiana Davis 1994 (Chapel Hill)
Until you know my pain
You say that you know me, but listen you only know my name
You don’t know my heart
You don’t know how much lingers in my thoughts
You know my profit margin, not about how much it cost
I took a few L’s but it don’t stand for what I lost
It’s what I gained from experience
I could’ve stayed down, but I got back up
Until you know my struggle
You will never understand what it took for me to rise above all of the rubble
I’d rather break my back than to watch my father suffer
Tell myself one day I’m gonna make it
Gonna buy him a house so we can move from where we staying
I’m always in drive never in park
I’m gonna leave my prints, best believe I’m gonna leave my mark
This is more than people think it is at least for me
It don’t mean nothing, no, it means everything
Until you know everything I’ve been through how can you judge me?
From what I see in the pictures, we all got a lil bit of the ugly
I’m not perfect, I have my flaws
But it doesn’t make me worthless
Maybe you would realize if you looked beyond the surface
I’m tryna switch up the narrative
Things I went through shifted the paradigm
I’m a class of my own
Diamond in the rough
I’m more skeptical now than I was before
Lie to my face one time and we’re at the end of our road
I’ve learned things through trial and error
Something’s I wished I’d tried or at least put in some effort
Until you know my story and I’m talking every single line and every single page
Maybe you then you’d understand why it’s not just a game
I play for myself and my day ones
When God made me, best believe that He made me strong
I know I was built for this
I just took a route that was different
Until you know the difference between what I did what I do
That I’m a changed person from what I was in my youth
Back when I was a stupid kid
Who would’ve given anything just to be famous
I didn’t realize that a price comes with the fame
It’s not easy having everybody knowing your name
I’m made for something more though
And when I leave this earth, I’m tryna leave it on a high note
Until you know me for me, and see me for me
You will never understand me or the words that I write
Cause if you really wanna know me just read between the lines
