Analysis of Cheek of Child

“Cheek of Child”

War cuts deep into cheek of child
Winged young warrior, flesh of peace
A heinous death unreconciled

An angel slain as Satan smiled
The irony will never cease
War cuts deep into cheek of child

Uplifted to the heavens wild,
On downy wings of sacred geese
A heinous death unreconciled

The sacrifice, stilly reviled,
on captive tongues with no release
War cuts deep into cheek of child

By savages, virtues defiled
What hope for evil to decease?
A heinous death unreconciled

Bids righteous spirits, once exiled,
to wrap the child in shepherd’s fleece
—an offering for earthly peace
War cuts deep into cheek of child
A heinous death unreconciled

About this poem

Frustrated by the suffering of all, especially the children, the most vulnerable victims of war. I search for hope and light, but when I think of all the suffering and dying children in the world, I feel so angry and discouraged.

Susan Mayer Brumel

I am a retired hospice social worker, who began writing poems about 2 years ago. I am married, a mom of two sons, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and grandma of two grandchildren who are the loves of my life. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…
