Analysis of Farewell
The train rolls past the depot, and gives a little toot
With a parting word and a hand-shake, I bid a sad farewell
With a vacant seat beside me, I drive away across the hills
To a lonely log cabin, near a shady mountain dell
I hear no voices singing, as I near the cabin door
All within that cabin, is silent, now and cold
And my memory wanders back, to the voices I have heard
Around that cabin, in the happy days of old
Many happy children have played near that cabin door
Many dainty flower lets, did near that cabin grow
Many songs and laffter, rode on the summer breeze
Many long cold winters, have the fields been white with snow
Many bitter tears, were shed one summer day
The haunting loss of a loved one, no one will ever know
Till standing on a hillside, beside an open grave
And watched a casket lowered, to the cold, hard sod below
Now like a moving picture, as memories canvass rolls
The long, eventful years, that come, and glide away
I see those dear, sweet children, that once I knew and loved
Their golden wave tresses, have now all turned to gray
