Analysis of The Awakening
When the summer rain
pounds the drought-parched earth,
a wild rejoicing surges forth
as each new-born creek and stream
finds its way to an ancient river bed,
where creatures, frozen in time, wait
and the seeds of hope lie sleeping.
Slowly, from their slumber,
each wondrous being wakens;
each stiffened limb moves,
emerging from the softened ground
to greet the light.
They must now find food,
or face a different death.
The crocodile stretches, spies a bird
watching the hungry frog,
which seizes a dragonfly
and is content.
Bird and dragonfly
no longer grace the earth,
yet crocodile and frog live on
to lay their eggs.
