Peacefully

She goes to bed early after supper,
after bidding her family and friends goodnight.
Suddenly, she’s drained
All alone, she tosses and turns in her spirit
She sleeps in snatches and sees some spectre beckoning her
She grabs her pillow tight with numb hands intermittently
and stretches for her medication in one spot
Coughing with the little strength left in her
Laboured breathing, gnashing of teeth go on in her secure room
But no sound made, no one hears the uneven rhythm of her heart
Yet there is noise inside her head like a tin factory
She is awake again and stares at the ceiling and walls
Allowing her organs rest
One moment, a painful screech from her heart shakes her violently
Then she rests with a confusing smile on her face.

In the morning
We hear “She died in her sleep peacefully”.

How peaceful?

About this poem

It's an unpublished poem that explains what the deceased went through before we find them dead in the morning. The irony of the word 'peacefully'.
