Digging for Gold

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

Embrace the world and you’ll get squeezed
Go look for sex and you’ll get teased
Teased into believing lies
Don’t worry you’ll find other guys

And after that there’s other men
So, come on honey let’s begin
You’ll have to start sometime you know
So why don’t you just let it go?

I’ll be the first but not the last
Just go on out and have a blast!

Then give it up to some old coot
Who’ll buy you fancy clothes and boots
Marry him and jump in bed
After all he’ll soon be dead

Then go throw out your line again
Another sucker, reel him in!

You won’t care if they call you whore
You’ll still shop at the finest stores
You look so good in boots and gloves
While you forfeit your chance for love

You watched as lots of other men
Found pretty girls and married them

But they can’t shop in fancy stores
They don’t have time because they’re poor
They watch their husbands and their friends
And always do what’s best for them

How can they all be so naïve?
They look for love and still believe!

They hope that they’ll have kids someday
So, they can watch them run and play
In grassy fields, on wind swept hills
And they give grandma quite a thrill

Blessed is the woman who values her purity!
