To the Bard of Stratford on Avin
Sonnet To the Bard of Stratford on Avon
(Upon kneeling before his remains and reading his epitaph to himself)
GOOD FRIEND FOR JESUS SAKE FOREBEAR,
TO DIGG THE DVST ENCLOSED HERE.
BLESTE BE YE MAN YT SPARES THESE STONES,
AND CURSED BE HE YT MOVES MY BONES.
Do I dare disturb the sacred dust here?
Or even more, these holy relic stones?
I merely come your soul to touch, please hear,
Your words touched mine) and leave alone your bones.
To be or not to be? God let you be
To strut and fret your hour upon life’s stage
And sent a muse of fire to inspire thee
You left us with much more than just a page.
Out, out, brief candle? But no, however.
Yours still burns brightly for eternity
You were not of an age, but forever
As wrote Ben Jonson so eloquently
So please hear my tortured rhyme to you Bill,
From one not fit to even fill your quill.
