A new way of life
I lie awake in my hospital bed.
Night after night a tear I shed.
My operation decides my fate.
Praying to God that its not to late.
Into recovery for an hour or two.
Waiting and not knowing what I had just been through.
Not often I'm scared awaiting to hear.
I just wanted all this to just disappear.
Wake up from this dream is all I kept saying.
This wasn't a dream so I just kept praying.
More tears more sorrow when is this going to end.
All this heartache is driving me round the bend.
The curtains drawn closed around my bed.
Come on please stop playing with my head.
My friends my family the sadness they show.
Only way round it I had to glow.
This life changing trauma I was to encounter.
Leaving me paralyzed was no longer banter.
Sorry to say my story had to be told.
A new way of life was to unfold.
The memories the sorrow they never go away.
They stay with you day after day.
The people around me have been my inspiration.
This is why I want to share this with the nation.
Good days and bad days such alot to take in.
Not knowing how to cope leaves my head in a spin.
Stay strong stay focused I kept telling myself.
Be Thankful of life Steve you've still got your health. xxx
About this poem
I wrote this poem the night before my major spinal surgery..whilst I was in my hospital bed. I was told I would never walk again and there was a 80% risk of me being paralyzed from the neck down... After my surgery I ended up paralyzed from the waist down and completely wheelchair dependent.. I read my poem often as it is so powerful..
