Juanita and Joe
They rode their horses cross the desert
Looking for the man
Who ran off with the wife of Carlos
And crossed the Rio Grande
The posse found him in the plaza
In Old town El Paso
He pleaded for forgiveness
He pleaded for their souls
Carlos wasn’t sympathetic
He wanted his revenge
Took the law into his own hands
Their time came to an end
The crowd gathered round
Near the bridge to Mexico
That was the moonlit night
Juanita first met Joe
Juanita worked the laundry
Joe worked at the hotel
They dealt with many characters
With many things to sell
They both kept out of trouble
Stayed away from bar room brawls
Stayed away from the men wanted dead or alive
That were posted on the walls
Juanita lived on Mesa Street
Joe Lived near the park
The distance between them
Was not that far apart
They agreed to meet on Saturday
At the dance with the lights down low
That was the evening
Juanita first kissed Joe
Juanita lost her mother
Seven years ago
That’s when Joe’s little brother drowned
In the Gulf of Mexico
El Paso planned a festival
To honor those who died
Dia de los Muertos
Was to celebrate their lives
That day they both remembered
The loved ones that they lost
Didn’t want to be alone any more
They had fallen deep in love
A beautiful fall sunset
Cast a magic autumn glow
That was the perfect night
Juanita married Joe
About this poem
I visualized this budding romance which begins under unlikely circumstances during the mid 19th century while visiting El Paso, TX.
