The Moment of Unexpected

Natalie Overby 1986 (United States)

March 22

It came uncovered,
With two faces, not one.
I confronted the customer,
And became a victim,
To whom he won.
The blade of his knife,
Stuck to my side,
The thoughts that flowed through my mind,
Before my health was the issue.
Now this guy is threatening my life,
Over a piece of paper with no value.
This job isn't right.
The people you work for,
Care more for the money,
Not for the lives of those,
Who work to help earn it.
I froze, dead in my tracks.
Thoughts of knocking him back,
Only replaced those of him fighting back,
And slinging his knife towards my leg,
My gut, and losing my life.
Which means so much more to me,
Because I am an individual with many meanings.
I am a mother, a lover, a daughter a friend, a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand.
Why does the world seem to bring each day passing with a cruel end?
I'm thankful for still living,
And having life.
But moving on from the situation,
Bring traumatizing memories to mind.
That at a moment second,
For no reason at all.
A life is threatened, and never promised tomorrow.

About this poem

Comes from a moment that happened, during a work day. Working at a gas station, most people take things for granted and don't think about those people you see while your talking to them and making your purchases. Imagine the attitudes and things that they face on a daily. And the situations that arise they have no control over.
