Sorrow of Sweet Springtime
My sweetheart's off among the flowers young
With springtime's sleepiness and toes still numb
Which grove she's in her soft light feet don't sing
Just speckled clouds and winds which promise rain to bring
An early beetle crash-lands past my face
And I plunge into the woods my heart to pace
March past fresh carnage stacked on flooded ways
Cross new wobbly bridges felled on frosty days
Mud swallowed paths that summer's soles had laid
Then zigzag routs through thicket ruts I made
But thorn from briar hooked into my sole
I pulled it, pain each step and leaking from the hole
Crows called out death for those in burrows held
Where teal into the tawny sod now melds
But thorn then hooked into my soul, behold
The sweetheart drifting in the current's flow of another soul
I heard the cuckoo then, sad harbinger of spring
I saw the bluebells gently waving in the wind
Then I knew, when you lose in love your heart you win
About this poem
The Spring, which brings birdsong, budding flowers, and brighter days, also carries rain, floods, and the vain pursuits of love. Sometimes one cannot help but drift into the sad sleepiness of Springtime.
