Taken for Granted
Taken for Granted
Each day comes and goes
Many taken for granted
Thinking there is always tomorrow
Moments lost; memories missed
You say to yourself
It won’t happen to me
They aren’t going anywhere
Little do you know
It can happen to you, to them
The ones you love and cherish
The ones you think will always be there
Taken from you
No warning; just gone
Unable to hear their voices, see their smiles, feel their touch
Your heart breaks, it shatters
No more phone calls
No more visits, shared stories, advice given
The pain, the hurt it lingers
A dull throbbing pain deep within you
You live with guilt for harsh words spoken, for apologies not said
Your emotions in constant turmoil
Never knowing how to feel; sad, angry, happy
Remembering the good times, avoiding the thoughts of the bad
Yearning for just one more day with them
Time creeps by
The pain settles to an ache
You push through the sorrow
You strive to do your best, hoping to still make them proud
As you face another day
You find yourself still feeling alone
Time will heal you, they say
It’ll get easier, your told
Lies, deceit
Time does not heal; it doesn’t get easier
The pain, the hurt remains
Pushing it to the depths of your soul
In hopes of feeling normal at least for a little while
You become numb; your emotions paralyzed
To cope with the loss
Each passing day you carry them with you
In your heart, in your thoughts
You tell their story,
You share the knowledge they once shared with you
You cherish the time you had with them
** Written for all those loved and lost. Don’t take for granted those in your life. Live your life as if today is your last for tomorrow is never promised.
