When I See You Sleeping

I look at you while you're sleeping
So you can't see the pain in my eyes
Flashbacks of that day haunt me
My white dress, your black shirt
Your promises to always love and cherish me
The tears in your eyes and mine as we stared
We saw our souls combining

I remember the times of laughter
But then I see the sorrow
The misery in your eyes
The misery in my heart
Happiness is not a promise
But a threat

Then I see you down on one knee
A shining treasure in your hand
Promising to love me
Thankful for our triumphs and downfalls
A smile of acceptance on your lips
Yes

I see the birth of our daughter
Holding my hand through my pain
Your joy astounding
Holding that tiny bundle in your arms
Proud

Smiling kisses
Remorseful kisses
Heated intimacy
Heartbroken intimacy

Then I see her
The dishonesty
The deception
The hours spent mourning for our life
Mourning for your acceptance
Your faithfulness
Your promises

I see you sleeping and you look happy
At peace
My heart yearns for you
For my husband, my everything
But that man is gone
You are but a boy, lost at sea
Heartless
