My Greatest Keeper
When I was in need of guidance...you were my first, my only call. You'd listen intently to every word...you picked me up when I would fall.
When I needed reassurance...you were right there by my side. "You can do this." You would say, as you wiped tears from my eyes.
The was you loved always inspired me...you were the brightest light in my whole world. Because of you I believe I can do anything...how lucky was I to be your girl?
Your strength through life was unwavering...you faced most obstacles head on. Beating so many odds must've been tiring, yet you always found it in you to carry on.
Your love was the definition of unconditional...no matter how far I'd stray...your forgiveness was unequivocal, despite all the mistakes I would make.
On the morning that my mother died, I felt everything inside me start to break. Within twenty minutes you were by my side, your hug healing so much heartache.
I never dreamed I'd be here without you, that was something I could never quite conceive...When you called me with your devastating news. I broke, time froze...I could barely even breathe.
Dropping everything I came to you as fast as I could...and spent your last eight months by your side. Helplessly I watched the cancer steal all that was good...no matter how hard you tried to fight.
You taught me so much in life, things I'll never forget...but there's one thing I wish you'd told me how to do...you taught me about love and pain and living with regrets, but you didn't teach me how to get through life without you.
About this poem
I wrote this for my Mema, she was the light of my world and my safe space my whole life. She was a true warrior, she beat stage 4 metastatic lung cancer in 2012 after battling it for 6 years (a miracle really) Then last August she was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer and unfortunately couldn't beat it. She passed April 13, 2022...life will never be the same...Rest In Paradise
