The Dawn Chorus
The day consumes the darkness and takes a breath of light
While morning shines its beacon into the fading night
A rooster rises early. His wake-up call is sent
Directing all to witness the daily dawn event
A distant flock's arrival is filling up the sky
They land upon their perches and magic starts to fly
The curtain slowly rises. The suspense quickly grows
A lone white dove coos softly; and thus begins the show
The sparrows and the blackbirds join in and harmonize
Their song flows through the meadow into the new sunrise
A warbler's trill produces hypnotic melodies
While mockingbirds are weaving symphonic tapestries
The magical dawn chorus is something to behold
A daily celebration that never will grow old
Their morning benediction is truly quite profound
A lifelong obligation to which they're duty-bound
About this poem
This poem was part of a writing challenge my cousin and I gave to each other. The challenge was to take 5 undisturbed minutes out of the day. The time was spent closing our eyes and listening to all the surrounding sounds! We wrote about our experience with what we had heard and the visual thoughts the sounds evoked.I was grateful to have chosen such a beautiful lively spring morning.
