Those eyes
We hurt, we cry, we stumble, and we break
We sing, and we dance, and our hearts melt away
But when the storm comes, and the rain is pouring
We hide, we cry, we run, and we forget
They say you can see the sparkle leaving the eyes
But there is no sparkle, there is no sunrise
We wait and we pray, and we care
But just for a minute there
And the questions are pouring and our hope is fading
I remember their faces
I remember the feeling
When my stomach got so tight I was barely breathing
When we screamed in our minds
When we wondered what to do
How to save him
How to change this
We looked for answers
We screamed for help
But how can we do something when we are just twelve
The sound of his breath was giving us hope
And all we could do was try to cope
But with every look, with every stare
Our faces were becoming more fare
And I looked into his eyes
I looked for so long
I swear I could see his soul
When the flashing lights got brighter
And I felt a little sparkle
I prayed that he was a fighter
And I wonder, and I dwell, and I hate that
I don’t know who those eyes loved
Who did they care for?
But I saw the last thing they did
And the anger, the fear, and the hate
When we tried to forget
When we tried to dream about anything else
Those eyes haunted us day and night
The hurt, the cry, the stumble, and the break
It just didn’t seem to matter anymore
The storm had past
But the damage was still there
And I hope one day I find those eyes
So I could say I am sorry
No matter what they tell me
“I AM SORRY”
About this poem
I wrote this poem right after I witnessed a motorcycle accident and a man died in front of me. I sat down and wrote exactly what I was feeling.
