An Englishman walks the Laugavegur Trail in Iceland
Long strides carry me forwards
Pursuing always one of Iceland’s sons
Heartbreaking views strike hearts like loves once lost
A sky torn by hail and rain leaves tears adrift
Common cause makes friends of strangers
Nations rendered and reforged as one
A broken man can refuse to be broken again
Fluttering leaves finally greet the gentle sunlight
Thor’s protection is our reward
Laughter and kindness await at our journey’s end
Peace on a still black sea.
About this poem
I recently did a long distance hike in Iceland with a guide and as part of a group of twelve. We were mainly solo travellers, none of whom knew each other beforehand. We were from all different countries, age groups, etc but we all came together and became friends as we hiked from hut to hut often in bad weather. The final hut was in a place called Thor’s Land which had some nice birch forests and was near a black lava field. One of our group was very seriously injured in a car accident twelve months before the trip, but he fought back to fitness and this was his first physical challenge since the accident. He is a very brave man. I just felt so inspired by the scenery, peoples stories, strangers coming together that I wrote a poem. I hope you like it. more »
