Taking up space
How can you question my worth
From the rolls on my belly,
To the second chin on my face
Do you think I’m lazy or a disgrace?
Cos my body works, it runs, it skips
But what does that tell you?
Cos you can’t see past the fat, on my hips.
How can you question my worth
When trying to decide whether you like me
Or not
Do you not feel embarrassed?
When I give you my love and everything I’ve got.
Just for you to use me for lust.
Was it naive of me to not question your trust?
How could I not see past the red flags
Cos’ they were so blinding
The things you said left me finding,
That little bit of love left for me.
But you didn’t realise my worth
Cos’ all you saw was she’s fat
She must be easy
That thought left me feeling quite queasy
Do fat girls not deserve love too?
The truth is fat girls are trying to find a place
On this earth
Trying to find the love they deserve.
But I no longer question my worth
Fat girls are beautiful,
we are enough.
And even when times get tough,
We pick ourselves up and realise our worth,
Because fat girls deserve a place on this earth.
About this poem
This poem is about how people perceive plus size bodies and how we are worthy of love just like anyone else. As a plus size women I wanted people to realise that just because I’m plus size doesn’t mean I have to change to fit into the world.
