We Must Remember

Although we will remember, we may not understand
The fury of the battles, fought in a foreign land
We grieve for all the soldiers, who never did come home
And some who did their duty, are in a world of their own
They gave all for their country, in a war they had to win
Then returning home to freedom , they're forgotten once again
To those war weary veterans, we owe the greatest debt
For they huddled in the trenches, and were hungry, cold and wet
The screams of their comrades, still haunt their nightly dreams
They cope in silence with it daily, with no help so it seems
The battles they continue, somewhere deep inside
Though they walk among us , a part of them has died
Now as we remember, those who died long ago
Think also of the others, whose demons kill them slow
They may have won the battles, like so many have before
But no matter what you think, they never won the war
For the war is never over, and the borders not defined
It's carried by those veterans, somewhere deep within their mind
Though they guaranteed our freedom, by giving up their own
Let us not abandon them, to die out there alone
For every soldier that ever fought, for the likes of you and me
The battles stay inside them, and they never will be free
As Canadians we must remember, while some were running scared
Those soldiers were not drafted, they willingly VOLUNTEERED
