Can you hear the moon?
Can you hear?
The sound of the silver falling moon raining
Away backwards from the Earth? It’s odd
That you might see the plunging moon trying
To fly in the bright blue sky, a waning crescent,
Trying to run backwards in time. The moon
Should be a silver brush outlining the night’s
Dark blue sky but instead wants to flee until
The sun takes its place in that dark sky,
So the moon can spend its nights recovering
From its tiring flight. What birds has the moon
Encountered during its roaming of the sky, trying
To see the other side of the Earth? The birds
Escape the sun’s beams for the safety of the
Moon’s fading dark. What mercy will the sun
Have when the moon disappears backwards into
The sky, leaving the birds to flee to its brighter twin?
Can still hear the moon, if you ever did at all?
About this poem
I wrote this poem after seeing the moon during the day and noticing how it blended into the background of the sky. I then thought about the science behind the moon and how it is gradually going away from the Earth.
