Where I come from

The country's shape reminds the letter of S
What country do you think about?
With me it is Vietnam
The pretty central of the country
It is called Quang Nam- DaNang
Which is my beautiful hometown
With the characteristics of QuangNam area
I was born with the tan skin
Brown eyes, black hair and broad nose
It is ugly, isn't it?
I accept that I am not pretty
But I am proud I come from QuangNam
The outside looking doesn't effect my inner beauty

16 years of existence in that place
There are many memories engraved on my mind
Whether wherever I go
QuangNam always remains forever in my life

The petite body shape
Perhaps I will weakness
It is not right to think of that
I have gone through many ups and downs in life
Family poverty, lack of everything
Disaster floods every year
It seemed to surrender to fate
But, it is nothing
Everything has to solve
Endure well and very effort
I passed all along with my family

What will come, will come
I arrived in America in a chilly winter day
Begin a life with everything is new
I seemed like was born again
New challenges, experiences, and opportunities
Helped me feel more confidence
Inclusion in this environment faster
4 years is not much time
But can't say it all in words

Everything changes
Different habitats
But there is one thing never changes
I'm still who I am- being a Vietnamese girl
Brown eyes, black hair and tan skin
Dominant traits of will iron and resilience
Ready to confront all challenges ahead

About this poem

This is the poem I wrote a few years ago after I came to America with my family. In my busy life, sometimes I forgot who I was and kept trying to assimilate into the crowd. Every time I read it, it reminded me of who I am and where I come from.
