Enduring Friendship
I saw your name upon the screen
And my heart skipped a beat.
So many years have come and gone
Since our love was new and sweet.
We were just children then,
But our feelings were, oh, so strong;
And yet, we knew the time was short,
And to each other we'd never belong.
That kindred spirit that we shared
Didn't die when we had to part.
It was set aside in a special place;
It kept living in our hearts.
And now, I know we'll talk again;
You said you'd be in touch.
The fact that you replied so soon
Said little, and yet so much.
I think that you remember well
The night we said goodbye,
The tender kiss, the warm embrace,
How hard I tried not to cry.
And though we've gone our separate ways,
How nice to remember and know
That all these years, the friendship has lived,
And has never lost its glow.
What comfort it brings just to think,
We can take it out now and then,
Dust it off in a moment's time,
And renew it once again.
It still is just as innocent and pure,
As it was when we were young;
It spans the years, the joys and the tears,
Accomplishments, and successes unsung.
And while it will not change our days,
Or alter our lives' directions,
It's good to know that you are there --
My special friendship connection.
About this poem
A first love that happened for me in high school changed into a lasting friendship, that we still enjoy today. Despite times of losing contact, when we reconnect it is as if we had never lost contact at all.
