I Wish
I wish I may
I wish I might
God, let me slip back into the past
For just one more night
I don’t want to fix mistakes
I don’t want to change the past
Just go back to when I was a kid
Those times went by too fast
I want to be outside all day
And see who can climb the tallest tree
I want to stay up and play Nintendo
Until the clock strikes three
I want to ride bikes around town
And try to ramp every hill
I want to talk baseball with my Dad
As he slaps some burgers on the grill
Just give me some of my yesterdays
And I’ll give you some of my tomorrows
I can’t think of a better remedy
For all of these modern day sorrows
But I guess I can’t go into the past
Those days are now distant dreams
So, until they make that time machine
I’ll just reminisce in the memories
I wish I may
I wish I might
God, show me a portal to the future
For just one night
I don’t want to forget the past
Just see what the future holds
I bet it would be amazing
Oh if I could see what all unfolds
Jump forward to where I’m an older man
Those times would be less hectic
No worries, just sitting on my porch
The scene sounds so majestic
I would be the greatest grandpa
Loved by all the grandkids
I’d teach them all my secrets
I’ll be much cooler than my wife is
Just give me some of my tomorrows
And I’ll give you some of my todays
I just want to jump into the future
To escape the worries of the day
But I guess I can’t go into the future
They haven’t made that portal
So I’ll just think of who I want to be
It’s stressful to be mortal
I wish I may
I wish I might
God, I think my heart is in the wrong
These feelings just don’t sit right
If I were to go into the past
What might I miss out on today?
To give away my tomorrows,
There must be a better way
And if I go into the future
Would that change my legacy?
The future is far ahead
To skip to it now, feels like heresy
So I think what’s best for me
Is to live today for what it is
It’s a great day to be alive
For grown-ups, and for kids
So I simply ask you for today
And I’ll give you all I can
Thank you for providing guidance
To this simple thinking man
