We live here
"I'm sorry the house is messy
But we live here" is something that I've learnt to say
I wasted so many years worrying about a mess that I could never change
Truth be told I can't remember what our home looked like before
I imagine it look like something from a magazine one with a perfect tidy home decor
Iv learnt to be at peace with dishes in the sink
Washing will always live in a pile
Weather it's dirty or its clean
The table will be covered in things of all and any sorts, newsletters, shopping lists, cow tags and school reports
The beds may not be made and the rooms might reflect, something like a train crash or a bus thats good and wrecked
Finger prints may paint the walls, the windows and the mirror, its not like we want to be best house on the block winners
I know this is all fine because
It's in this place we're home
and one day all those little messy
things won't ever be on show
I know things won't stay this way
When the kids one day are grown
The house will be an empty shell
That stands still in an airy silence of its own
Those dirty dishes that filled the sink
We're once a daily reminder
Of all the meals we shared together
Of the dinner time stories and a house filled with so much laughter
Those piles of washing we lived from
Were a way that I could see, how my little boys were
becoming just who they were meant to be
The messy table spoke of all, the special things we'd do, of trips and new adventures and of living a life fufilled
The messy beds meant there was a place
for two tieard boys to go, memories of reading bed time stories ,goodnight kisses and tickling little toes
The finger prints will too be gone
and it's these il miss the most, because the people who put them there have moved out and now are grown
Il want to have back the disarray, that filled most every room, for it floods my heart with reminders of my two little people who here grew
So now you know that in this house
If it's a mess you think you see, really what I see
are many precious memories of the joy my sons both bring to me
About this poem
Written late one night after a busy working mum day. I was feeling overwhelmed by the mess I saw around me. It occurred to me that I was probably no different to any other busy mum and that the mess I could see was really the memories of the two small humans I was raising
