Illusions
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
We're all chasing illusions,
Hoping to catch the slippery dreams
That dance before our eyes,
Elusive and tantalizing.
We lovers, dreamers, and artists
Are particularly susceptible
To the glamorous call of the illusion,
The promise of something more.
We know it's not real,
But we can't help being inspired,
Transported to another world
By the mere suggestion of it.
Maybe it's the promise of love,
The idea that someone out there
Is waiting for us,
That we're not alone in this vast universe.
Maybe it's the dream of success,
The vision of ourselves as great artists,
The hope that we can create something
That resonates with others.
Whatever it is, we can't escape it,
The pull of the illusion,
The siren song that beckons us forward,
Whispering promises we can't resist.
And so we follow it,
Our hearts racing with excitement,
Our souls ablaze with passion,
Compelled by the possibility of something greater.
And when we make that connection,
When we finally catch a glimpse
Of the beauty that lies just beyond our reach,
We're unstoppable.
It's like a floodgate opening,
A rush of creative energy and inspiration,
A deluge of emotion and feeling,
Overflowing into the world.
We write beautiful songs,
We paint masterpiece after masterpiece,
We tell stories that touch people's hearts,
And we achieve things we never thought possible.
Yes, the illusion can be dangerous,
Seducing us with its false promises,
Leading us down paths that are not meant for us.
But for those who are meant to follow it,
For those whose hearts are open,
There's no escaping it.
We're pulled forward by the siren's song,
Our eyes fixed on the horizon,
Our hearts full of hope and possibility,
As we chase our dreams into the unknown.
