THE GUNSLINGER
mad hippie poet 1974 (new jersey)
Let me stop you before you shoot me down with what you think of as your icicle stare. I have been down this dirt road many eternities before all the town urban legends I faced and bullshit on them, and my words did fall.
This story that's starting to unfold is confirmed. The only difference is I am becoming the man, the myth, and the forever-living legend. I read all the books on how David slayed Goliath and how others rode the flame of the dragon's tail. I bled for days, not knowing that there was no need.
I keep asking myself, will this smoke of their guns ever fade? Don't these hired gunmen know that there are people in the skies above with me who have much love, and the hired hands' bullets are just for show?
What happens when the hunter becomes the one who becomes the hunted? What happens when the angels and the birds sing the same song? What happens when I refuse to do as I am told and die
I have become the gunslinger, the one the townspeople form in the square to see I am the hero they all need to be. I am the voice that they need to hear. I've become the one who they will hang because for them, with my eyes opened, and I am beginning to care
