Summer dreams

A boy’s most cherished sight and time of year,
Birthday balloons poised perfectly on a picnic table,
He stands beneath a great trees foliage,
Pondering, wondering,

What golden orb revolves up high above,
Blazing the surrounding air with its intense glare?
Chirping Cicadas sound a breathless fermata,
A neverending sigh for love’s long lost youth;

Its fountain embedded in the drapery of the sky,
Passed by streaks of white willow wisp clouds,
Dragged along streams of jet sonic marine blue,
Yet neither as quick as the ideas sifting through his head.

A flurry of emotions whirl through thought,
“Will it be Icarus and nought?”
“Or must one’s destiny be bravely fought?”
“Either way, unrelenting trials will be sought.”

And as he thinks one scarcely notes
That the audience has become the stage.
“Exeunt Shakespeare and enter Hamlet!”
A roar echoes, in a play with unmatched trepidation,

An imagination unfettered by letter.
On the center stage, is where we’ll all fall down,
Teleported into the blank spaces of Alice’s pages,
Within a hypnotizing wonderland we see such sight:

Blighted roses in a lightless labyrinth,
Gentle lullabies recited on the piano with a monotone sorrow,
Uncertain footsteps tracing back and forth in monochrome static.
Behold! The scene begins to fade as light frees us from this cage;

Waking to Seagulls' languorous laughter
As our footprints press into the sand,
hark the bellowing, crashing waves
Surging towards their crimson finale!

And as the curtains descend,
Tales of adventure and failure will unfold,
Along with fireworks underneath the Summer sky,
Yes- this is where all my dreams will fly.

About this poem

Summer is a special time with great significance to me personally since I was born during this season, and like many others, my happiest moments as a child were spent during the summer, so I thought I would just pay tribute to this wonderful time of the year. It's a time of adventure and exploration, but also potentially, a time of great self-reflection, and that's what I hope to bring and articulate through this poem. Enjoy!

Michael Ren

College student with a complicated on off relationship with literature and poetry. I believe that poetry and literature seem to have the ability to connect people and initiate transformation and healing, so I'd like to use this poem as a testing ground to improve my writing style. I'd also like to learn about horticulture and own a garden someday, although that day seems far off, but hey-a kid can dream right? more…
