The day after you survived

What if it doesn't work,
What if you survive.

The next day you wake up,
And you are alive.

The confusion on you're child's face,
No longer their hero,

Destined now to go thru life,
Pity'd like you are just a zero.

If you hadn't failed yet again,
The healing could have begun,

A memory you should be,
But life is a battle you've never won.

About this poem

This is a poem about surviving the unthinkable. About choosing to leave but being forced to stay. Perhaps the attempt is not worth the survival stigma.

I was born in June 1974, I have been writing poetry for as long as I can remember but after a head injury I stopped writing for more than a decade. In the winter of 2021 we were evacuated for 4-5 weeks and I felt compelled to write again. I have been writing since. Through therapy I am finding my words again. more…
