Graziella’s Grace”
“Graziella’s Grace”
I watched her sleeping high upon,
a mattress floating in the air
The sunlight flickered on her brow,
and scent of rose was everywhere
I can not tell how long I stayed,
as she drew in each shallow breath
Or what I may have done for her,
as she was in the sight of death
I do not know if I revealed,
that which was on my tongue to say
Or, from within my grateful heart,
I shared with her my love that day
I listened as the clock struck twelve,
which moved me then to take her hand-
I held it gently as I wept,
and tried my best to understand
How woman once so spirited,
and wise beyond all others wise
Would soon be but a memory,
of one beloved and idolized
I do remember standing there,
my eyes fixed on her peaceful face
For never had I ever seen,
someone dying with such grace
About this poem
As a hospice counselor, I visited with Graziella once a week for nearly two years. She was brilliant, artistic, generous of heart, and the most spiritual person I have ever known. This poem captures my last visit with her just before she died. Many years have passed, but I still feel her spirit in the world.
