Poetic Sacrifice

Angelina McMurtrey 1992 (California)

I went for a hike, bare foot so I can feel the earth under the souls of my feet
Where Mother Gaia intertwined her energy with mine
I hugged a tree like we were lifelong friends and it was the last time I will ever see them again
I went to see all the wonders that nature has in store for me
I just sat in silence as I projected my imagination, flying so high that my heart stopped…….

My will was met when I no longer had a pulse
My body will decay into what little was left of me to begin with
I am purified by the animals I will feed, giving my sacrifice a purpose….

Giving me a purpose……

I hear you say my name one more time when you feel my ghostly presence
I watch you as you sleep peacefully, my love
Even though the sheets stay cold
I am there
When you see me in your dreams just know
It's really me
My vows to you were, "death due us part" but don't forget my love, we share the same soul
Physically I had to leave but in spirit
I shall remain
A part of you till you are ready to become whole again
Our legacy will live on in the hearts of those we had touched
So damaged and broken as individuals
But as one we were flawlessly perfect
I'm sorry for having to leave you so soon but don't write this tragedy mistaken

I want you to know
My love for you never died……

Even though I did

About this poem

I wrote this poem while thinking about my best friend who lost her fiancé to suicide. He took his last breath while she was holding him trying to figure out what had happened. She is still wondering that to this day.

Angelina McMurtrey

I've been writing poetry and short stories since before I was twelve years old. My sixth grade teacher entered one of my poems into a contest and I actually won first place. Since then I have always known I had a talent for writing. Growing up in an abusive environment writing was always my way of escape; so not only do I have a talent for it, but it helps with my mental health. more…
