Transmogrification
Transmogrification 1.
(Or, how cousin Sandra changed my mind)
I sat on the worn-out green couch and stared into space
Not allowing myself to know what I had to, but could not face
Oh, when I heard she was gone some surreal metaphysical alchemy turned my heart to stone
A cold shield from her memories, none could pass the unyielding barrier made of “Gone…”
Memories, thoughts chipped and shattered on the stone
Time, harlequin thief
Against my resolve, softened my grief
Memories snuck in unbidden
Like ice cracking granite
The rock, my heart began to crumble and fall
Whispered, through my grief, I heard her soft Texas drawl-
“Give the love you lost to all those living loves you hold so dear.”
Hearing this, each falling bit of stone changed into a tear
The tears changed into tiny diamonds on their way to the ground
And changed again into stardust without a sound
Thus aware, I was engulfed again in that enveloping surreal, metaphysical clime
From griever to giver, my Sandra Beth set me straight one last time
From that vivid love so gentle, so bold
There was a gift whose wealth cannot be told
Riches do not matter, diamonds, money or gold-
Our riches are couched in the memories we hold
