WHISPERS OF FANTASY, ECHOES OF REALITY
Elizabeth Njeri Waweru 1991 (Naivasha)
How did I survive?
Life always offered me two doors,
One is the roughed up door to my reality,
And another golden gate to the fantasy world.
That is how I survived,
I always chose the golden gate,
My fantasies were wild and felt so real,
My soul could fly high, run wild in the fantasy world.
It was like an escape room,
But instead of scary it's beautiful possibilities,
Who would want to escape limitless possibilities,
So I spent so much time there I barely remember my real life.
I could build any life I wanted,
From the greatest love stories borrowed from telenovelas,
To the greatest dreams of my life coming true,
There was no limit, my whole being went wild.
I was free in my fantasy world,
The kind of freedom I craved for my real world,
I would sneak back to the roughed up door once in a while,
Just to feel and cry my soul out and remind myself what never to choose.
Even when the real world got better,
It never could match my fantasy world,
But with my little freedom, I made the right choices,
To build all the castles from fantasy to my real world.
So it may not all match up,
But I'm in a reality I don't want to run from,
So now I actually choose my roughed up door not the golden gate,
I can honestly say now, I'm living in the real world.
About this poem
