She Lies In Shallow Water
She Lies In Shallow Water
She lies in shallow water, eyes fixed upon the sky.
Unseen by fishermen in boats who fish and drift on by.
Another rotting tree branch falls with a gentle splashing kiss,
They search and searched for quite some time, she felt them for a while.
They came and went with boats and dogs but deep inside she knew
This soft cold bed of mud, would hold her closed against their eyes.
She will not move again.
Wind whipped ripples on water, distort the liquid light
Alone she keeps her lovers sleep, she know that this is it.
The cold and quiet trickling tide ebbs and flows again
The rustling reeds make music, for a lovers final rest.
She doesn't know who laid her here, no memory of he
Who lightly brushed her once red hair and slowly loved her less.
Then told the cops she just left town.
Time will hide the smallest trace of evidence of harm.
The kids will soon get used to calling daddy's girfriend 'mum'
Once a year perhaps a friend will stop to speak some words,
To say how much she's missed and float a small bouquet of flowers.
But he, he will never visit here nor let the kids play near,
His guilty heart apart from fear will keep his distance fixed.
Love fell drowning there.
She lies in shallow water, looking fixed up at the sky.
The seasons come, and come and go, still mark the tidal ebb and flow.
Time will have no meaning and memory will fade,
The water shallow, dark and cold will not give up it's prize.
The kids are grown and scattered now and he has long since passed
There's no more flowers or words of grief, just shadows drifting by.
She will not move again.
About this poem
Every year in the UK, an MP stands up in the houses of parliament and reads the list of all the women and girls in the UK who were murdered by men in the previous year. The reading was attended last year by only three male MPs.
