Phoenix Odious

Robert Rowe 1967 (Agana, Guam)

Provocation triggered

Quicksilver lightning flashes
Igniting the chamber's core
Awakening the sulfurous beast inside
Growing straining
Fiery ember of terror
Red faced fever burning
Volcanic pressure building
Inside exploding forth
A phoenix odious
In the strongest of minds
Sanity vitriolized by
Putrid caustic smog
Tympanic heart pounding
Announcing the beast's renewed life
Temptation's silvery voice
Ringing your ears
Deceptively whispering
[Resistance... is futile]
Duality its nature
Subtly extolled
Then will wrest from you the
Last remnant of Self as
Acicular verbs prick
Your vulnerable pride.
To fight it we must
Learn its secret of life
For the beast lives within us all
Yet knowing its secret
Assures no victorious triumph
For the results of all the words
All the deeds
Equals the sum of your
Choices to sin or not

No beast can force that upon you.

About this poem
