Ode to the Fallen

Oh, marvellous light
Your glory bright
That once shone where
The poppies grew.

Such precious lives
Lie buried low
In Flanders Fields
Where daffs now grow.

Old bones rest on
Their souls long gone
Hold in mind
Of what went wrong.

They had their dreams
But blooded scenes
In wars fought hard
Left bloodshed scars.

Their lives so lost
Youth, dreams, hope, love
All now resting
In realms above.

So now residing
In Heaven blessed
In enchanted light
They reminisce.

About this poem

A simplistic reminder that war is harsh. In recognition of ANZAC Day 2024 when we remember those Australian and New Zealand heroes who fell at Gallipoli.

Written with so much truth. Lots of feelings. Great write!

This poem portrays the enevitable outcome of war (death), and how it, in the end, abruptly destroys the things that make one an existentially functional human being; "dreams, hope, love".
