Pulled Back In

Kailey Norris 2004 (North Carolina)

Tired, teary eyes,
I know this feeling.
Tense, angry body,
I’ve seen this before.

I’m sliding down a slippery hill,
Pulled back in by a force I've already met.
Torn down, tripped up in a familiar place,
Slipping into somewhere I do not want to be.

Pulled back down so easily,
A long ladder to my escape,
Looking up only after the exhaustion.
Looking for the daylight.
I know the exit is near, but each time it has been moved.
I try to remember the last maze,
Only to lead myself deeper.
I have no knowledge of this place,
I just know I cannot stay.
