Silently Numb

I woke up in the morning,
And she was there.
Beautiful brown eyes,
And long brown hair.

How could she be smiling,
And her eyes not red.
I was very surprised,
That she was not dead.

I don’t understand why,
She is attracted to me.
Her life is so aimless,
Always a reckless spree.

Overindulgence,
Abuse, and excess,
Are somehow ignored,
When she would undress.

But I know somewhere inside,
Beyond the perpetual disgrace,
Is a beautiful soul,
Fighting to find its place.

She is a user,
But deep inside she’s not a loser.
Please get better,
And maybe we can be together.

But I don’t think she will stop,
I don’t think she knows how.
Her life will always be guided,
In the direction her demons allow.

Now, she gets silently numb,
And she doesn’t care.
She knows she can’t go,
So she finds a way there.

About this poem

A girl that I met that had some major issues in life. She became attracted to me but she could not put the brakes on the bad decision making. We eventually drifted apart and all I know about her now are unconfirmed rumors about how she continued down that destructive path.

Raised on a small farm outside of a small town in Texas, I was no stranger to work. It is this work ethic that has propelled my professional success but there is this other side of me. The side that deeply thinks about things. The side with an imagination and a desire to use my hands for more than just brute physical labor. more…
