The Stars Are My Only Friends

Each night, when the sun is replaced by the moon, they show up.
They stay as long as I need them
and quietly leave before dawn.
They know all my secrets,
without me ever having to say a word.
Only ones to know, yet to never judge.
They have seen me smile myself to sleep after a good day;
and have counted the tears marking my pillow when I fall apart.
It’s by them greeting me every night, without fail, that I know tomorrow will be a new day.
A new start and another try.
It’s their consistent glow that never leaves me in complete darkness.
A soft, subtle light that reminds me I’m not alone.
Without being so blindingly bright that I feel overwhelmed or crowded.
They are a constant, a comfort, and a companion.
The stars are my only friends.
