Powder
When I was young,
and didn’t understand
how things were,
I held out my hand
to a butterfly with sparkling wings.
It settled in my palm
seeking shelter from the wind.
I saw its beauty.
I felt its warmth.
I knew where it had been
I closed my hand to keep it safe,
and felt it push against my fingers
and then lie still.
It’s fight given up.
Reconciled.
Until....
My fingers opened -
to let it glide.
To watch it’s wings.
To see it’s might.
To see the beauty of iridescent light.
It limped away,
the dust of flight upon my palm.
I gave it nothing.
Just childish harm.
I am so sorry.
And I am so scared.
That I know what’s right, and what’s not.
And that.
At heart.
I just.
Don’t.
Care.
